If you spend any time at all on Disney message boards, you might find yourself reading the food forums. Once you’re there, it’s hard not to get caught up in the Disney food hysteria, where every bite of a Mickey Bar is nirvana and the popcorn falls from heaven. It’s easy to be swayed by other people’s opinions and while I generally find Disney food to be good and often terrific, the truth is that some of the food that’s achieved cult status really doesn’t deserve it. I mean, a Mickey Bar is a just a Dove bar shaped like a Mickey head, right? It’s hardly worthy of the poetic descriptions you might find of it. This prompted us to ask you, the readers, what you think is the most overrated Disney food? Your answers ran the gamut and here are just a few:
Disney popcorn. Most of you love it, but some of you don’t think it’s fit for feeding the birds.
The much-maligned turkey leg. Probably the most divisive piece of smoked meat in America. You either love it or you hate it, and from what we can tell, most of you kind of hate it.
The Dole Whip. Without question, a cult status treat many of you adore, but a few of you (and yes, this is going in your permanent record) don’t get the fuss.
The pretzel. You know what we discovered when we posted this question? Most of you think Disney pretzels are pretty bad. Heavy, tasteless, overpriced. I’m going to have to go with the majority here.
I think some Disney food takes on cult status because we associate it with good times. A Dole Whip isn’t going to taste as good in the middle of a mall food court, but sharing one with your grandfather while you walk through Adventureland, well, you’re going remember that day. And for this reason, we forgive any and all hyperbole over Disney food, except when it gets us to buy something that tastes really bad.
But hey, we should have known snacking on a three-pound turkey leg wasn’t the best choice, right?
Disney Food Report Tip: You can buy any of these items with one snack credit. Of course, we’re not saying we recommend you do it, just that you can.
