Bring Back the Half Yard!

There are times when items will disappear from a Walt Disney World restaurant menu, much like a favorite attraction or area (Flower Street, we hardly knew ye). Save Toad was a battle cry from 1998 that fell flat and many people are still reeling from Horizons’ closing. But where are the online petitions when a favorite food item is threatened with forced extinction?

On a trip in 2004, we ate at the Rose and Crown Pub in the UK Pavilion at Epcot. I noticed that the menu offered a collectible half yard cup of beer. Curiosity got the better of me and I ordered a half yard to go with my fish and chips. It was a modest $12.00 and they offered refills for $8.00.

It was amazing.

A yard of beer is a very tall beer glass that holds just under 48 ounces. The half yard that was offered at the Rose and Crown held 28 ounces. Still a formidable beer, regardless.

I was able to enjoy the half yard in 2004 and 2006. Sadly, by the time our 2008 trip rolled around, the half yard was no longer on the menu. When I questioned the castmember about its absence, she responded that there were a lot of drunk people wondering around World Showcase with empty half yards. I have also heard that it was a health issue with refilling the half yards.

Either way, the half yard will be missed.
